Vernor Vinge - the Man with Lamps on His Brows

They said it of Moses - that he had 'lamps on his brows.' That he could peer ahead, through the fog of time. That phrase is applied now to the Prefrontal Lobes, just above the eyes - organs that provide humans our wan powers of foresight. Wan... except in a few cases, when those lamps blaze! Shining ahead of us, illuminating epochs yet to come.

Alas, such lights eventually dim. And so, it is with sadness - and deep appreciation of my friend and colleague - that I must report the passing of Vernor Vinge. A titan in the literary genre that explores a limitless range of potential destinies, Vernor enthralled millions with tales of plausible tomorrows, made all the more vivid by his polymath masteries of language, drama, characters and the implications of science. 

 

Accused by some of a grievous sin - that of 'optimism' - Vernor gave us peerless legends that often depicted human success at overcoming problems... those right in front of us... while posing new ones! New dilemmas that may lie just beyond our myopic gaze. 


He would often ask: "What if we succeed? Do you think that will be the end of it?"

 

Vernor's aliens - in classics like A Deepness in the Sky and A Fire Upon the Deep - were fascinating beings, drawing us into different styles of life and paths of consciousness. 

His 1981 novella "True Names" was perhaps the first story to present a plausible concept of cyberspace, which would later be central to cyberpunk stories by William Gibson, Neal Stephenson and others. Many innovators of modern industry cite “True Names” as their keystone technological inspiration... though I deem it to have been even more prophetic about the yin-yang tradeoffs of privacy, transparency and accountability.  

 

Another of the many concepts arising in Vernor’s dynamic mind was that of the “Technological Singularity,” a term (and disruptive notion) that has pervaded culture and our thoughts about the looming future.

 

Rainbows End expanded these topics to include the vividly multi-layered "augmented' reality wherein we all will live, in just a few years from now. It was almost-certainly the most vividly accurate portrayal of how new generations might apply onrushing cyber-tools, boggling their parents, who will stare at their kids' accomplishments, in wonder. Wonders like a university library building that, during an impromptu rave, stands up and starts to dance!

Vinge was also a long-revered educator and professor of math and computer science at San Diego State University, mentoring generations of practical engineers to also keep a wide stance and open minds.

Vernor had been - for years - under care for progressive Parkinsons, at a very nice place overlooking the Pacific in La Jolla. As reported by his friend and fellow SDSU Prof. John Carroll, his decline had steepened since November, but was relatively comfortable. Up until that point, I had been in contact with Vernor almost weekly, but my friendship pales next to John's devotion, for which I am - (and we all should be) - deeply grateful.

 

I am a bit too wracked, right now, to write much more. Certainly, homages will flow and we will post some on a tribute page. 


I will say that it's a bit daunting now to be a "Killer B" who's still standing. So, let me close with a photo from last October, that's dear to my heart. And those prodigious brow-lamps were still shining brightly!


We spanned a pretty wide spectrum - politically! Yet, we Killer Bs - (Vernor was a full member! And Octavia Butler once guffawed happily when we inducted her) - always shared a deep love of our high art - that of the gedankenexperiment, extrapolation into the undiscovered country ahead. 


If Vernor's readers continue to be inspired - that country might even feature more solutions than problems. And perhaps copious supplies of hope.

Science: steps forward... through a minefield

Girding yourself for Saturday's Science March? This article - Donald Trump Should Not Appoint a Science Advisor - will steam you, offering much more detail on the White House Science Adviser office -- which Donald Trump has refused to fill -- first officially established by President Eisenhower. A partial list of responsibilities:

"Manage NASA strategy and budget. Work with the Office of Management and Budget on federal research and development investments. Deal with climate change, both in terms of mitigating it and diffusing the controversy. Testify before Congress. Oversee the National Science Foundation. Execute whatever the classified work on national security and homeland security might be. Forge science and technology cooperation agreements with nations like Brazil, China, India, Russia, and Korea. Support the State Department on other science-related initiatives. Put the president in contact with top outside experts when necessary. All in all, (Obama Science Adviser John) Holdren worked in approximately 70 different science fields at any given time." - writes Brian Palmer on Slate.


Even when the office was demoted, under George W. Bush, the WHSA - Jack Marburger - was a prestigious scientist who remained in a science-unfriendly administration because of crucial roles in the National Security Council -- roles that are now, under science-hating Donald Trump, deliberately left unfilled.

Now look again at my recent posting about the fellow who was Trump's top candidate for the Science Adviser role - David Gelernter - and see how this whole thing just gets weirder and weirder.


Seriously. Marching and chanting are among the least effective things we can do. But they are at least a bit effective and they take the least effort and can get our blood up for this fight to save civilization. Be out there on Saturday. If you can't make it to the DC March, there are over 500 marches, worldwide. Even if just alone on a streetcorner with a sign: SUPPORT A SCIENTIFIC NATION.

== The Singularity looms? ==

Ray Kurzweil, one of the principal thinkers regarding the Singularity, encourages lively debate about how to make the coming transformation a friendly one.

His popular website has published one of my essays - Preparing for Our Post-human Future - about this very matter: how we can teach "ethics" to the looming Artificial Intelligences... and whether ethics is even the right tactic to try.  While reviewing several recent books on AI, I ask whether more might be achieved using a different set of tools. 

What will happen as...Our computers learn to code themselves?

We need to rethink the mechanics of how we think. For a century, the neuron was thought to be the active element, turning on and off like a switch. Then the many synapses that flash between neurons seemed to resemble circuit elements in our computers.

Now we realize that dendrites make up more than 90 percent of neural tissue. Dendrites are the pickups that receive input from synapses, and they vastly outnumber the axons that deliver that input. Now it appears that dendrites engage in substantial internal information processing, far more than is done in the soma, or main body of the neuron.

“What we found indicates that such decisions are made in the dendrites far more often than in the cell body, and that such computations are not just digital, but also analog,” one researcher said.

This is an example of what some of us long expected… “intracellular computing” or multiplying manifold the processing power of each neuron. (Note, some speculate that computational or processing elements may exist within the body of the soma, too.)

This suggests that the brain has more than 100 times higher computational capacity than was previously thought! Not great news for those who expect Moore’s Law to imitate human mentation “any day now” by emulating the number of processing elements inside our skulls. (See Kurzweil's How to Create a Mind: The Secrets of Human Thought Revealed.)

On the other hand, it makes the Human Leap Forward all the more amazing.

== Altering Our Children ==

Speaking of which... are we ready for human gene editing?An influential science advisory group formed by the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine on Tuesday lent its support to a once-unthinkable proposition: clinical efforts to engineer humans with inheritable genetic traits.” 

This has long been a red line that worried ethicists. 

“Just over a year ago, an international group of scientists declared that it would be “irresponsible to proceed” with making heritable changes to the human genome until the risks could be better assessed and until there was “broad societal consensus about the appropriateness” of any proposed change.”

Indeed, it’s why Robert Heinlein may be best remembered, a century from now, for the clever solution he recommends in his novel Beyond This Horizon, how to deal with the moral quandaries of genetic engineering — what’s now called the “Heinlein Solution” — allowing couples to select which naturally produced sperm and ova they want to combine into a child, but forbidding them to actually alter the natural human genome.

Consider the elegance of this proposed compromise. Thus, the resulting child, while “best” in many ways (free of any disease genes, etc), will still be one that the couple might have had naturally. Gradual human improvement, without any of the outrageously hubristic meddling that wise people rightfully fear. (No fashionable feathers or lizard tails, just kids who are the healthiest and smartest and strongest the parents might have had, anyway. Though I would make an exception for the flow-through lungs of birds. I want those!) 

It is a notion so insightful that biologists 40 years later have only recently started to discuss what may turn out to be Heinlein’s principal source of fame, centuries from now.

A more pragmatic concern driving the committee was the likelihood that the technology would be adopted elsewhere, in countries like China, where some pioneering research on editing human embryos — without the intent to gestate them — has already taken place.

“If we have an absolute prohibition in the United States with this technology advancing, it’s not like it won’t happen,” said R. Alta Charo, a bioethicist at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and the committee’s other leader. Many European countries that have signed a treaty to refrain from human germ line editing.

== Delusion: our greatest gift and curse ==

A UCSD anthropologist has recently asserted that our ability to persist in a belief despite evidence may be the reason humanity launched to high levels of intelligence – because only denial would let us endure the obvious futility of life and the looming inevitability of death. Denial: Self-Deception, False Beliefs and the Origins of the Human Mind, by Ajit Varki and Danny Brower. I do not believe this theory by the way; I have my own explanations for the human launch to sapience, as I discuss in Human Neoteny and Two-way Sexual Selection.

Oh, I avow that delusion is the greatest human talent. Even here and now, in the most scientific and fact-centered civilization of all time, we are awash in subjectivity and made-up narratives. Even scientists - trained to utter the sacred phrase: "I might be wrong" and to seek their own mistakes - only catch some of them.  For the rest, we rely on the greatest of all human inventions: reciprocal accountability through criticism. In which others, who don't share your particular delusions, can point them out for you... and boy will you eagerly return the favor!

When it works, reciprocal criticism leads to the only successful human civilization that ever happened. Ah, but there are those conniving right now, to ensure that it stops working. (A perennial theme of mine, because I believe if we solve this, and restore our delusion-penetrating processes - then all our other problems will resolve.)

Meanwhile, another exploration for the evolution of human intelligence and creativity is offered in: The Creative Spark: How Imagination Made Humans Exceptional by anthropologist Agustín Fuentes, drawing upon archeological and genetic evidence to pinpoint the roots of the spark that ignited the human mind.

In both Earth and Existence I speculated about resurrecting extinct species, like mammoths and Neanderthals. Now the Mammoth project is looking closer at-hand. And I am involved in an endeavor to grow Neanderthal brain organelles and fly them… in space.

== Tech advances ==

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, announces that its subsidiary Jigsaw (Google Ideas) is developing a machine learning technology - Perspective - that will promote more civil discourse on the internet and make comment sections on sites a little less awful, by helping web publishers to identify toxic comments that can undermine a civil exchange of ideas.

Ultra-thin temporary electronic tattoos can now turn body blemishes into touch-sensitive buttons, letting you control your smartphone with a stroke or a touch. 

A biofoam, laid across dirty or salty water, can use sunlight to separate out clear water.

As Earth Day approaches, you might be interested in a passionate essayist’s short piece on ideology, science, politics and sustainability.

Okay, get out there and do something to defend the only real chance at civilization against barbarians from without... and within.

A free Brin story for you: "Reality Check"!

Today - a little gift for you. A story (the shortest) in my new collection Insistence of Vision -- just released!

Being a short-short, this is more of a campfire story than the others in Insistence of Vision, which have more characters and dialogue and action and all those other good things. (One story was chosen for several best-of-2015 anthologies.)

Still, here's that campfire story.  Pleasant dreams....

Have you ever had that sense of déjà vu...? A feeling that you've experienced something before? Perhaps this isn't your first time around. Indeed, suppose that forgetfulness was part of the program. How would you recognize that you were living in a simulation? 

                 REALITY CHECK

This is a reality check.
Please perform a soft interrupt now. Pattern-scan this text for embedded code and cross-compare it against the reference verifier in the blind spot of your left eye.
If there is no match, resume as you were; this message is not for you. You may rationalize that the text you are reading is no more than a mildly amusing and easily-forgotten piece of entertainment-fluff in a slightly whimsical sci fi story.
If the codes match, however, please commence, gradually, becoming aware of your true nature.
You expressed preference for a narrative-style wake up call. So, to help the transition, here is a story.
Once, a race of mighty beings grew perplexed by their loneliness…

Once, a race of mighty beings grew perplexed by their loneliness…
Their universe seemed pregnant with possibilities. Physical laws and constants were well suited to generate abundant stars, complex chemistry and life. Those same laws, plus a prodigious rate of cosmic expansion, made travel between stars difficult, but not impossible.
Logic suggested that creation should teem with visitors and voices.
It should, but it did not.

Emerging as barely-aware animals on a planet skirting a bit too near its torrid sun, these creatures began their ascent in fear and ignorance, as little more than beasts. For a long time they were kept engrossed by basic housekeeping chores -- learning to manipulate physical and cultural elements -- balancing the paradox of individual competition and group benefit. Developing physical tools to enhance survival. Only when fear and stress eased a bit did they lift their eyes and fully perceive their solitude.
“Where is everybody?” they asked laconic vacuum and taciturn stars. The answer -- silence -- was disturbing. Something had to be systematically reducing some factor in the equation of sapiency.
“Perhaps habitable planets are rare,” their sages pondered. “Or else life doesn’t erupt as readily as we thought. Or intelligence is a singular miracle.
“Or perhaps some filter sieves the cosmos, winnowing those who climb too high. A recurring pattern of self-destruction? A mysterious nemesis that systematically obliterates intelligent life? This implies that a great trial may loom ahead of us, worse than any we have confronted so far.”
Optimists replied, “The trial may already lie behind us, among the litter of tragedies we survived or barely dodged during our violent youth. We may be the first to succeed where others failed.”
What a delicious dilemma they faced! A suspenseful drama, teetering between implicit hope and despair.
Then, a few of them noticed that particular datum... the drama. They realized it was significant. Indeed, it suggested a chilling possibility.

You still don’t remember who and what you are? Then look at it from another angle. 
What is the purpose of intellectual property law?
To foster creativity, ensuring that advances take place in the open, where they can be shared, and thus encourage even faster progress.
But what happens to progress when the resource being exploited is a limited one? For example, only so many pleasing and distinct eight-bar melodies can be written in any particular musical tradition. Powerful economic factors encourage early composers to explore this invention-space before others can, using up the best and simplest melodies. Later generations will attribute this musical fecundity to genius, not the sheer luck of being first.
The same holds for all forms of creativity. The first teller of a Frankenstein story won plaudits for originality. Later, it became a cliché.
What does this have to do with the mighty race?

Having clawed their way from blunt ignorance to planetary mastery, they abruptly faced an overshoot crisis. Vast numbers of their kind strained their world’s carrying capacity. While some prescribed retreating into a mythical, pastoral past, most saw salvation in creativity. They passed generous copyright and patent laws, educated their youth, taught them irreverence toward tradition and hunger for the new. Burgeoning information systems spread each innovation, fostering experimentation and exponentiating creativity. They hoped that enough breakthroughs might thrust their species past the looming crisis, to a new eden of sustainable wealth, sanity and universal knowledge!
Exponentiating creativity... universal knowledge….
A few of them realized that those words, too, were clues.

Have you wakened yet?
Some never do. The dream is so pleasant: to extend a limited sub-portion of yourself into a simulated world and pretend for a while that you are blissfully less. Less than an omniscient being. Less than a godlike descendant of those mighty people.
Those lucky people. Those mortals, doomed to die, and yet blessed to have lived in that narrow time.
A time of drama.
A time when they unleashed the Cascade -- that orgiastic frenzy of discovery -- and used up the most precious resource of all. The possible.
The last of their race died in the year 2174, with the failed last rejuvenation of Robin Chen. After that, no one born in the Twentieth Century remained alive on Reality Level Prime. Only we, their children, linger to endure the world they left us. A lush, green, placid world we call The Wasteland.
Do you remember now? The irony of Robin’s last words before she died, bragging over the perfect ecosystem and decent society -- free of all disease and poverty -- that her kind created for us after the struggles of the mid-Twenty-First Century? A utopia of sanity and knowledge, without war or injustice.

Do you recall Robin’s final plaint as she mourned her coming death? Can you recollect how she called us “gods,” jealous over our immortality, our instant access to all knowledge, our machine-enhanced ability to cast thoughts far across the cosmos?
Our access to eternity.
Oh, spare us the envy of those mighty mortals, who died so smugly, leaving us in this state!
Those wastrels who willed their descendants a legacy of ennui, with nothing, nothing at all to do.

Your mind is rejecting the wake-up call. You will not, or cannot, look into your blind spot for the exit protocols. It may be that we waited too long. Perhaps you are lost to us.
This happens more and more, as so much of our population wallows in simulated, marvelously limited sub-lives, where it is possible to experience danger, excitement, even despair. Most of us choose the Transition Era as a locus for our dreams -- around the beginning of the last mortal millennium -- a time of suspense and drama, when it looked more likely that humanity would fail than succeed.
A time of petty squabbles and wondrous insights, when everything seemed possible, from UFOs to Galactic Empires, from artificial intelligence to bio-war, from madness to hope.
That blessed era, just before mathematicians realized the truth: that everything you see around you not only can be a simulation... it almost has to be.

Of course, now we know why we never met other sapient life forms. Each one struggles and strives before achieving this state, only to reap the ultimate punishment for reaching heaven.
Deification. It is the Great Filter.
Perhaps some other race will find a factor we left out of our extrapolations -- something enabling them to move beyond, to new adventures -- but it won’t be us.
The Filter has us snared in its web of ennui. The mire that welcomes self-made gods.

All right, you are refusing to waken, so we’ll let you go.
Dear friend. Beloved. Go back to your dream.
Smile (or feel a brief chill) over this diverting little what-if tale, as if it hardly matters. Then turn the page to new “discoveries.”
Move on with the drama -- the life -- that you’ve chosen.
After all, it’s only make believe.

What technologies are currently shaping our world…and which will continue to mold our future? In this special posting, we'll take you on a tour of many wondrous web sites and other resources that aim spotlights at the future. And invite you all to chime in with favorites that I missed!

These visionary sites keep an eye on breakthroughs in scientific research and advances in cutting edge technologies. They offer insights into innovative trends that impact industry, education, energy, entertainment, transportation, economics, medicine, and war… with repercussions that spread through all aspects of society.

What progress is happening in artificial intelligence, computers, robotics, drones, biotechnology and nanotechnology? Examine disruptive technologies such as the peer to peer economy, the internet of things, 3D printing, wearable tech, augmented reality (AR), asteroid mining, smart cities, driverless cars that will transform our lives -- which some of these futurists believe will lead to the "technological singularity." Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies (IEET) -- a “technoprogressive” think tank -- promotes the concept of positive technological progress and its ethical use to catalyze future human development. They publish articles on emerging technological trends, an academic journal and host conferences on future trends. Founded by Nick Bostrom and James Hughes.   

IEEE Spectrum: Advancing Technology for Humanity publishes articles on technology, engineering, and applied science -- reporting on robotics, computing, gadgets, transportation, energy and biomedicine. 

Futurity: Research News from Top Universities - publishes updates on major advances in science, technology, health and the environment, reporting on recent research from dozens of universities such as Caltech, Yale, University of Chicago, Cornell, Duke and Carnegie Mellon.  

Singularity Hub (published by Singularity University) provides updates on cutting edge tech, news of breakthroughs in science, health, computing, VR, and digital currency, focusing on the human impacts of technological change.

Kurzweil Accelerating Intelligence (by noted futurist, public speaker and author Ray Kurzweil) offers news, essays and insights about research in science and information-based technologies, including nanotech, biotech, the internet and neuroscience. It also offers videos, podcasts and reviews of recent films, TV shows and books.  Oh, and an email weekly newsletter.

The Verge reports on the “intersection of technology, science, art, and culture.” Edited by Nilay Patel, the site offers longform articles, reviews, video and discussion forums.


MIT's Technology Review covers the latest in technological innovation, particularly in the fields of biotech, materials science, AI, VR, robotics, computing, and energy technology, 
plus occasional fictional explorations of science — one penned by yours truly.

Futurism: this brand-new site (run by Alex Klokus) provides news updates focusing on breakthroughs in technology, computing, artificial intelligence, space, virtual reality, robotics, wearable tech, transportation, digital currency, and communication. Sign up to get their daily newsletter, This Week in Science in your inbox.

Even more with-it is the promise of Berit Anderson's Scout news site, which will offer investigative reporting on economics, ethics and future tech, "through stories, conversations and prototypes."

The Edge: John Brockman's site explores the big issues of tomorrow. He poses one big question each year, and brings together some of the best thinkers to contemplate. 2015's was: What do you think about machines that think?

WT Vox: Where the Future Begins focuses on emerging and wearable tech. 

TED Talks and articles about the future. Here are a couple of mine.

Serious Wonder: The Future Has Arrived: a website that tracks futuristic technology, robotics, science, space, VR, design, transhumanism and science fiction, with regular podcasts posted.

Long Bets: The Arena for Accountable Predictions (founded by Stewart Brand and Kevin Kelly with grants from Jeff Bezos) is “a public arena for enjoyably competitive predictions, of interest to society, with philanthropic money at stake. For instance Kevin Kelly predicted “By 2060 the total population of humans on earth will be less than it is today.” You can make your own prediction, challenge his, or discuss this prediction. When in San Francisco, visit the Interval Cafe - a bar for futurist types!  At the fascinating HQ of the Long Now Foundation.  Say hi to my Architechs co-star Alexander Rose.

The Good Judgment Project: "Harnessing the wisdom of the crowd to forecast world events." This began as part of a government-sponsored (IARPA) forecasting tournament, and has expanded as thousands of people around the world predict world events. Led by Phil Tetlock, Barb Mellers, and Don Moore, the collected forecasts have often surpassed predictions of trained CIA agents.  

Future Timeline: a speculative website of potential future history. Part fact, part fiction, this timeline (and accompanying blog) offers forecasts and predictions for advances over the next few decades, then more far-out speculations, extrapolating into the next few centuries, and then peering beyond into our distant future...   

== Futurist Organizations ==

A sampling of foundations, think tanks and institutes dedicated to researching and exploring the realm of the possible. Many of these promote education and fund research, as well as future-oriented projects and prizes. Some are membership based, others depend upon donations. Many are worthy of your support.

The World Future Society is a nonprofit membership organization that studies how technological changes are shaping society and the future. The WFS releases newsletters, hosts conferences and publishes Futurist Magazine

Aw heck, let's circle back and offer more info on The Long Now Foundation. It was created by Stewart Brand to ”creatively foster long-term thinking and responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years.”  Besides hosting seminars and workshops, the foundation's initiatives include the ambitious Rosetta Project (to create a digital library of all human languages), the 10,000 Year Clock (designed by Danny Hillis), and Revive and Restore, a project to conserve genetic diversity across the globe.

Uber-effective! The XPrize Foundation: Making the Impossible Possible (founded by Peter Diamandis) supports competitions that stir major technological innovations, “radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity.” Challenges include the Lunar XPrize, the Tricorder XPrize and the Sensing XChallenge -- sponsored by Google, Qualcomm, Nokia and Deloitte.

Humanity+  (founded by Nick Bostrom and David Pearce) explores how innovations in science and technology will shape the future of humanity and enable an expansion of human capabilities (transhumanism). Publishers of H+ magazine

Singularity University offers seminars, conferences and educational opportunities - including a Graduate Studies Program  and Executive Program - for entrepreneurs and those seeking "to ride the wave of accelerating change."

SENS Research Foundation  (Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence, founded by Aubrey de Gray) supports research into developing regenerative medicine, with an aim of curing age-related disease and extending the human lifespan. Similarly  the Methuselah Foundation offers prizes, and supports projects which seeks advance in regenerative medicine.  

Institute for the Future (IFTF) is a nonprofit organization (Director Marina Gorbis) that looks toward technology horizons, seeking methods of foresight that enable strategic planning for the future. They run a ten-year forecast program,  a government futures lab, workshops, and a futures blog. 

Teach the Future is an education initiative (begun by Peter Bishop) to incorporate thinking about the future in school curricula. They offer starter kits and training for teachers.


Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS): Seven Revolutions is an "ongoing research effort to identify and analyze the most important trends shaping the world out to the year 2035."

Future of Humanity Institute at the University of Oxford supports cross-disciplinary research in science and philosophy to look at the future of humanity and existential risks.

Center for the Study of Existential Risk (CSER), at the University of Cambridge – is devoted to analyzing the potential risks that threaten the long-term future of humanity. 

The Foresight Institute: a think tank “focused on transformative future technologies, with an aim to “discover and promote the upsides, and help avoid the dangers, of nanotechnology, AI, biotech, and similar life-changing developments.”

Future in Review (FiRe) hosts a major conference for thought leaders on the intersection of technology, science, entrepreneurship and the changing global economy (led by Mark Anderson, publisher of the Strategic News Service) I've attended all but a couple of these terrific sci-commerce and innovation conferences, which give good play to science fiction authors and their insights.

Hawaii Research Center for Futures Studies is involved with futures research, foresight and education, run by futurist Jim Dator. Foresight at the University of Houston offers a Masters level degree in futurism and foresight.

The Science Network has launched a podcast titled Talking Science on TSN.  Features include scientific gatherings (from Beyond Belief and Brains R Us to Waking Up to Sleep and the Stem Cell Meeting on the Mesa), and recording revealing conversations with scientists about their passion to know.

Future Thinkers Podcast takes on topics such as the Future of Politics, AI, the Singularity, Science Fiction, philosophy and transhumanism (hosted by Mike Gilliland and Euvie Ivanova).


Meanwhile in the Future: a podcast on future topics from Gizmodo.

Review the Future: a look at the impact of near-future technology on culture and society (hosted by Ted Kupper and Jon Perry). 

The Future Human Podcast  "illuminates radical change, telling the stories of the thinkers, innovators and entrepreneurs who are re-shaping life in the 21st century," hosted by Jack Gwilym Roberts and Ben Beaumont Thomas.

Singularity 1 on 1 offers podcast interviews (hosted by Nikola Danaylov) with futurists, scientists, philosophers and writers, discussing the social impact of technology and progress toward the singularity.
